On September 14, President Jeanette called the meeting to order. Guests included Sue Maynor, Vice President of Programs for Special Olympics and Julie Scott, Principal of Dutch Fork middle school. During Health and Happiness it was announced that members Brian Buck and Jacqueline Klynenberg were married on Saturday. Congratulations and Best wishes to Brian and Jacqueline! Board meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday at Panera Bread at 7:30 AM. Bentley Murrell reminded folks to sign-up for the Okra Strut in support of our booth. Harold Crawford reported that the fundraising committee would be meeting to discuss additional fundraising efforts. Jim Wellman reported that the latest dues statements were mailed last week and requested that members carefully review their addresses. Any changes needed should be reported to Jim. Sue Maynor from Special Olympics then received a check from some of the proceeds from the Tour de Lake.

Guests included: Fred Splittgerber, George Staples, Sarah Bixler, Rowena Funderburk, Ione Cockrell and District Governor Paula Matthews.

Jim Wellman on behalf of the club and with great "humility" presented Sarah Bixler, the club's scholarship recipient, a check towards her continued studies at CLEMSON UNIVERSITY. Sarah is a fine young lady and the club is honored to support her in her studies and future career. She is a communications major.

Judy Johnson, past president, presented to the club a plaque from the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission for the club's sponsorship of a baseball team in the ICRC baseball league.

Brook Williams, club member, gave a classification talk.

The club was honored to have District Governor Paula Matthews as the speaker of the day. She shared the strategic goals of Rotary for 2011-2012:

1. Strengthened local clubs 2. Give to the Foundation 3. Enhance Rotary's public image.

In addition to challenging the club to maintain its membership, she told of the coming Spring District Conference at Hilton Head in March 23-25, 2012, at the Marriott. The theme will be "Happy Days".

Ione Cockrell, District Chair for the Foundation's permanent fund, presented Rod Funderburk a plaque and pin for becoming a member of The Rotary Foundation Bequest Society. Rod is currently the Assistant Governor for Area Two in the district.

Meeting was closed with President Jeanette Coulter leading the club in reciting the Four Way Test.

NOTES FROM THE JUNE 15, 2011 MEETING OF THE ROTARY

CLUB OF LAKE MURRY –IRMO

The meeting was called to order by President Judy Johnson and the invocation was delivered by Dr. Ros Browning. Following the announcements, Lyman Whitehead presented a hilarious story during Health and Happiness. (One of his all time best, I must say.)

The speaker for the day, Sergeant Major James “Mack” McDowell, was introduced by John Adair. A highly-decorated serviceman, SGM McDowell presented an informative narrative entitled “Service through Peacekeeping”. The New York native took us through his peacekeeping experiences in Nepal, the Gaza-Strip, New Orleans, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Of particular interest were McDowell’s efforts to aid Afghan farmers in their quest to obtain and grow saffron (a spice) as a cash crop instead of poppy. For his efforts SGM McDowell was named a CNN Hero for 2007.

The meeting was called to order by President Dr. Judy Johnson followed by the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. President Johnson made announcements about upcoming Rotary events, and announced that the Small Gifts and Grants committee awarded $300.00 to Deputy Mark Ryan of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. John Adair announced that next week’s speaker is an Army veteran of the Iraq/Afghanistan conflict.

Ginny Barr presented Paul Harris Fellows to Jason Baldwin, Barbara Crawford, Herb Harrison and Kristen Danielson.

Mickey Epting gave his classification speech.

Lyman Whitehead introduced the guest speakers for the meeting, Representatives Chip Huggins and Nathan Ballentine. They spoke about current legislation including the Amazon.com deal, government restructuring and re-districting. Both of the speakers took many questions from the club membership.

The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo was pleased to recognize the March Student of the Month from Seven Oaks Elementary, Nate Price. Nate was introduced by Ann Copelan, Principal of Seven Oaks Elementary. Principal Copelan went on to inform us that Nate is a 5th grade student in the AP program. He is an avid reader with a positive attitude and a spirit of volunteerism. Nate is always helping his fellow students and is a true example of service above self. The club presented Nate with an award for "service above self" the motto for Rotarians and a gift certificate from Sonic the Irmo/Ballentine location which is delighted to reward students making great choices in our community. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Michael Price also attended the meeting. Congratulations to Nate and his family.

Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club Meeting

March 30, 2011

President Judy Johnson called the meeting to order. Following the invocation by Jay Seward, Lyman Whitehead followed with a minute for Health and Happiness.

Judy asked 7 Oaks Elementary School Principal Ann Copeland to introduce Nate Price, the Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Student of the Month. Nate is a 5th grader who in addition to being an avid reader participates in the AGP program at school. Nate was accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Price.

Ginny Barr recognized Mrs. Glenda Childs as a Paul Harris Fellow on behalf of Beetle and Debra Bailey.

A Classification Talk was given by Vice President Larry Stohs and Jay Seward introduced our newest Rotary Member, Miss Sabrina Ceballos, Membership and Outreach Director for YMCA Northwest. Sabrina was sponsored for membership by Jay.

Announcements for the meeting were given as follows:

• Beetle Bailey needs volunteers for meeting reporters. Please see Beetle to volunteer.

• The District Conference is April 28. Registration is available on the district website.

• Blount Shepard asked for volunteers for the Adopt-A-Highway Clean up which will be held Saturday, April 9th. We will meet at Blount’s office at 8:00am for Breakfast. Clean up will begin at 8:45am and be complete by 9:30am.

• Volunteers are needed for Meals on Wheels. Please see Jim Wellman to sign up.

• Eddie Robinson presented a review of this month’s Rotary Magazine issue which included health warning signs every man should take note of. At that time, several members asked to be excused from the meeting.

• Judy asked for support for this year's Heritage “Birdies for Charity” Fundraiser. Rotarians are asked to pledge a voluntary amount for each birdie made during the Heritage Golf Tournament in Hilton Head. All proceeds will benefit Rotary International’s funding for Polio eradication. The participating Rotarian who guesses closest to how many total birdies will be made during the golf tournament without going over will win a trip to the Bahamas.

Jeanette Coulter introduced our speaker for the meeting, Mrs. Lynn Douglas, Marketing and Community Relations Director for the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Following Lynn’s presentation, the meeting was adjourned by Judy.

Our speaker was Paul Jeter, Executive Director, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, SC Chapter, along with Amy Harmon, School and Youth Director.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was founded in 1949. It is a $3,000,000 organization with Chapters in all states and Canada. The Society supports research and works to improve quality of life for patients. It also helps with expenses during treatment. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society helps update medical professionals and patients to make sure all have up to date information.

Bill Kopelman also spoke to the group. He gave a brief review of his last 2 years battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Paul Harris Fellow was presented to Bill Kopelman.

Lake Murray-Irmo Meeting Minutes for February 9, 2011

President Judy Johnson called the meeting to order and the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance followed.

Darren Bouknight welcomed all visitors and Lyman Whitehead gave a robust Health and Happiness followed by Happy Dollars.

Bill Danielson reported that the Carraba’s fundraiser had netted between $2,300 and $2,400. This was a great fundraiser and a really good time for all who were able to attend. It was also great to have support from a local business.

Dr. Cary Hite introduced our speaker, Whit Merrifield. Whit was a member of the National Championship Baseball Team at the University of South Carolina. Whit is now a member of the Kansas City Royals organization.

Whit talked about what it was like to play throughout the Regionals, Super Regionals, and the College World Series. He gave great insight about the year and his teammates. What was probably the most interesting story was when Whit talked about getting the game winning hit against UCLA in the national championship game.

After members’ questions were asked and answered, President Judy adjourned the meeting.

The guest speaker Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club meeting for the January 26, 2011 was Karen Brosius, Executive Director of Columbia Museum of Art. Karen became the Executive Director in 2004. The mission of the museum is to inspire and enrich lives through art. It is the South Carolina international art museum with more than 6,000 works of art. The average attendance is 11,000 visitors each month. The Who Shot Rock & Roll photographic history event covering 1955 to present will be held February 25 through May 22 featuring 175 photographic images in the collection. The Nature and the Grand American Vision exhibit of masterpieces of the Hudson River School painters will be displayed November 17 through April 1, 2012.

The Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club was pleased to recognize the January Student of the Month from Harbison West Elementary, Carsyn Cantey. Carsyn is a 5th grade student in the gifted program. She serves as a safety patrol and is well respected among her peers. She likes to dance and is a great example of our future leaders. The club was delighted to present Carsyn with an award for "service above self" the motto for Rotarians and a gift certificate from Sonic the Irmo/Ballentine location which is delighted to reward students making great choices in our community. Her mother, Susan Cantey, and Dr. Barbara Brockhard, Principal at Harbison West Elementary, were also in attendance at the meeting.

Lyman lead our club in the in the invocation and health and happiness. President Judy Johnson gave a very special gift to Cliff of the Seven Oaks Recreation Center for all that he does for our club.

John Adair introduced his son and daughter in law (Kirk and Laura Adair). Kirk is in the insurance industry with the SC Insuarnce Pool and Laura is the media specialiest at Irmo Elementary. They lead us in singing some of our holiday favorites and a few of their own too.

It was a wonderful meeting to celebrate the Christmas season.

Lake Murray Irmo Rotary Meeting Minutes November 17, 2010

President Judy opened the meeting with John Adair leading us in Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Lyman Whitehead humored us with a little health, happiness and Happy Dollars. Darren Bouknight introduced our guests and Jacque Kleynenberg reminded us the Babcock Center is raising funds by selling a special Christmas ornament.

Our annual Christmas Party is being held at MurrayWood Swim and Racquet Club on December 3^rd. No meeting will be held the week of ThanksGiving.

Scott Moseley of Irmo Insurance Agency gave his classification speech.

Jeanette Coulter introduced our speaker, Kathleen Shaw of Sistercare. Her hope is to get the word out as to who they are and what they do as most people are not familiar with their organization. They operate three shelters in the metro area, two in Lexington and one in Richland County, providing a safe haven for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. The shelters have the appearance of a routine home in an older neighborhood. These shelters are always full with an average stay of 27 days. Sistercare served 661 individuals last year (399 women 262 children) however they had to turn away 260. Sistercare is very involved with children. Most of their clients are mothers with school age children. The children are placed in school and provided counseling. Domestic violence is a cycle, stopping the cycle begins with children. The counseling is provided to the family while in the shelter and after they leave. Some families continue counseling for many years. Unfortunately many victims go back to the situation which brought them to Sistercare. It can take leaving the situation as many as seven times before the individual is successful in separating themselves from the violence and abuse. Success is heightened when the victim’s children become involved. Sistercare provides legal aide and will go the court with the victim. They also operate a 24-7 crisis line, a rural outreach program, speakers’ bureau and volunteer program. It is estimated 33% of all female ER admissions are due to domestic violence.

Their funding is received from the Federal and State Government, United Way, Foundations and benevolent contributions. Their funding is down due to the economy however as the economy and funding go down their need goes up.

Lake Murray-Irmo meeting of 11/10

The meeting was convened by President Judy Johnson and Jeff Baldwin led us in a very poignant prayer that focused on Veteran’s Day. Sergeant-at-Arms Darren Bouknight introduced three visitors to the meeting: Ellen Moore, Terry Klosterman and Dorothy Goodwin. We had a significant number of announcements, reminders and updates, which were as follows:

- Reminded to turn-in the money from sale of Belk’s fund raising tickets.

- Reminded about our renewed involvement in Meals-on-Wheels, where we have responsibility for delivery twice a week.

- Reminder to sign-up for the Christmas party to be held at Rawl’s Creek on Friday evening, December 3.

- Visitor Terry Klosterman reminded us of the flyers on each table for the annual fund raiser of the Spring Valley Club.

- Ginny Barr provided a Foundation moment, describing the Permanent Fund, an endowment to provide long-term stability to the Foundation. The Permanent Fund was started in 1930, currently holds $579.4 million and there are four means by which a Rotarian can make a contribution. Several of our Club’s members have made contributions to the Permanent Fund.

- Eddie Robinson provided a very nice review of the major articles in the October edition of the Rotarian Magazine.

- Jeff Baldwin provided an update on the Tour de Lake Bicycle Rally and Brooks Williams updated us on the Tour’s fund raising efforts, encouraging us to offer any potential suggestions, with a goal of securing commitments by year end.

Bill Brooks provided the weekly classification talk. He revealed that he is a 1956 graduate of the Citadel, has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Florida, worked as a research chemist in the private sector for 30 years and spent the final 15 years of his career as head of the Department of Agriculture’s research efforts in SC.

Lyman Whitehead introduced our speaker Barbara Wilm, VP of Community Relations for the Lexington County Health Services District. Barbara has responsibility for representing the Medical Center in community outreach efforts. She began her career with the Medical Center in 1986, running the operating room in the Irmo satellite facility.

Lexington Medical Center opened on 1/7/71. Its original location was to be in Batesburg-Leesville; however, the Hulons donated the property off I26 with the agreement that the couple could live in the hospital until their deaths. Upon opening the Medical Center occupied 75,000 square feet. This has grown to 1 million, with an additional 1 million in remote facilities around the county. They operate the largest nursing home for Alzheimer’s in SC, the Carroll Campbell Place and in 1986 opened the first ambulatory care center in the State, in Irmo. Lexington Medical currently employs 5,039 and last year they had 19K patients, delivered 3K babies, had 95 patient visits to the emergency room (second busiest in the State) and had 145K patients in their urgent care centers. The Medical Center off I26 is land-locked; therefore they have purchased 44 acres on Long Pond Road to accommodate future growth. The cardiac center will begin operations in the coming year after reaching agreement with Providence Hospital and Palmetto Health.

The Lake Murray Irmo Rotary Club were honored to have football coaches Tom Knotts of
Dutch Fork High and Bob Hanna of Irmo High speak to our club this morning about this
weeks game where the Silver Foxes play the Yellow Jackets in the final game of the
season.  The Coaches spoke of the respect they have for each other and their
players. They are looking forward to a tough game and both know their players are
going to give it all they have. Each Coach brought with them two representatives
from their team, the young men spoke to us about their college plans as well as
their desire to win on Friday night. It should be a great game. Go support your
team!  Friday night, November 5th, 7:30 at Dutch Fork Stadium.
 
The rotary club or Lake Murray-Irmo is a service organization that happens to meet
on Wednesday mornings!  Sure, breakfast is important, but that isn't what we're
about .  We do good things for great people as we try to make the central Midlands
of South Carolina a better place while also fulfilling our commitment to the goals

Lake-Murray Irmo Weekly Meeting Minutes
11/3/2010
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 by President Judy Johnson.  The invocation was delivered by Blount Shepard.  Guests were introduced by Darren Bouknight.  
The Belk Charity Sale is taking place this Saturday November 6^th from 6AM-10AM.  Tickets are $5.
Tuesday November 9^th is the annual Chuck Larsen Silent Auction.  It will be held at the Radisson.  Tickets are $25/person or $40/couple.
November is Foundation month for Rotary.
Health and Happiness and Happy Dollars were given by Lyman Whitehead.
Larry Stohs introduced Tom Knotts, Dutch Fork High School football coach and Bob Hanna, Irmo High School football coach.  Both were asked to say a few words regarding the matchup at Dutch Fork High School this Friday night November 5^th. 
Rod Funderburk introduced our speaker, Karly Miller, who was sponsored by the Lexington Rotary Club and was awarded a Rotary International Ambassadorial Academic Year Scholarship for the 2010-2011 school year.  She will be studying in Lima, Peru.  Karly is originally from Chicago, IL, but relocated to Cincinnati, OH at the age of 1.  She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Marine Science.  She spoke to us about the scholarship process and what she hopes to learn while studying abroad.

The guest speaker Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club meeting for the October 27, 2010 was Lisa Lee Smith, the Midlands Representative for ShelterBox. Since its inception in 2000, ShelterBox has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief, providing emergency shelter for the people who need it most on every continent. ShelterBox instantly responds to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide. Each box supplies an extended family with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value.

Lisa Lee Smith is a Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Chapin Sunrise and formerly in the Rotary Club of Lexington. She is an attorney in private practice in Lexington with the firm of Davis, Frawley, Anderson, McCauley, Ayer, Fisher & Smith, LLC and also serves as a Certified Mediator and Arbitrator. Lisa is also very involved with the Lexington County Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association and Girl Scouts in the Irmo-Chapin area. She is a graduate of Irmo High School, Clemson University and the University of South Carolina, School of Law. Lisa is married to Pauley Smith, a teacher in School District 5, and they have three children.

The Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club was so pleased to recognise September Student of the Month from Leaphart Elementary, Mikayla Bouknight. Mikayla was chosen for "her service to her peers and great attitude" said Dr. Rebecca McKenzie-Appling, Principal al Leaphart. The club was delighted to present Mikayla with an award for "service above self" the motto for Rotarians and a gift certificate from Sonic the Irmo/Ballentine location who are delighted to reward students making great choices in our community. The Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary is a service organization that meets on Wednesday mornings! Sure, breakfast is important, but that isn't what we're about (even though the food is really quite good). LAKE MURRY – IRMO ROTARY CLUB

September 22, 2010

The invocation for September 22 was provided by Lyn Richards. Lyman Whitehead gave us Health and Happiness and led the club in Happy Dollar contributions. Jacqueline Kleynenberg announced that beginning September 29 the club will recognize a student from a local school each month. Maria Hargrave announced that the club will participate in a vocational visit to Trevett’s Direct on October 6. Tim Williams gave a classification talk.

The newest member of the Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary club, Mark Boone, was inducted on September 22, 2010. Mr. Boone is affiliated with Community Roundtable, which is an organization whose purpose is to encourage and enable the entire community to promote positive youth development. We welcome Mark Boone to our club.

Our guest speaker for the morning was Charles D. Beaman, Jr. He is responsible for the system’s overall operations. Mr. Beaman served as president of Palmetto Health from the date of inception, February 8, 1998, until his appointment as the system's CEO and president on January 2, 2007. Prior to the creation of Palmetto Health in 1998, Beaman was president and CEO of Baptist Healthcare System of South Carolina, Inc. where he had worked with the hospital system for 25 years.

Mr. Beaman joined Baptist Healthcare System as a unit manager in 1973. Over the next 15 years, he served in various management positions with increasing responsibilities including director of Unit Management, vice president and executive assistant to the president, executive vice president and CEO of Baptist Medical Center and system's chief operating officer. In 1987, he was named president and chief executive officer of Baptist Healthcare System of South Carolina, Inc., formerly South Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Inc.

Mr. Beaman talked briefly on the overall Palmetto Health system, but concentrated most of his remarks on the proposed new 76 bed hospital next to the current Parkridge Surgery Center near Irmo. This will be a full-service 24/7 hospital that will include an emergency department. The selection process to choose an architectural firm is currently underway. Relocation of the road is expected to take place in early 2011. Construction of the building is expected to begin n late 2011 with anticipated opening of the hospital in late 2013.

Minutes for Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Meeting - Wednesday September 15, 2010

This meeting of the Lake Murray/Irmo Rotary year began with the invocation by Dr. Ros Browning and Pledge of Allegiance.

Next the visitors and guests were recognized and announcements that the Board meeting scheduled for September 16^th has been postponed. Lyman Whitehead announced the news that Jeanette Coulter’s sister has passed away and other “Heath and Happiness” news.

The meeting was presided over by Bill Danielson since several club members, including President Judy Johnson, were away in Charleston attending a Rotary training meeting. Bill introduced Kelly Payne who gave the introduction for our speaker Coach Tom Knotts with Dutch Fork High School.

Coach Knotts is in his first year as Head football coach and Athletic Director at Dutch Fork High School. He comes to us from Independence High School in Charlotte, North Carolina where he has enjoyed a splendid career coaching and has a record of 296 wins and 60 losses and also a 109 game winning streak to be proud of while at Independence. Coach Knotts has a wife, Keisha Knotts and a 2 year old son, Jackson.

Prior to his coaching career, Knotts was an active and successful High school student and athlete and attended Duke University with a scholarship playing Quarterback for the Blue Devils. His experience in high school playing practically every sport, including football, basketball, tennis and baseball gives him a great base of experience with his new responsibilities as the Athletic Director at Dutch Fork in addition to being the head football coach. As A.D. he has been asked to reshape the athletic department and build it into a program that is as successful as renowned as the academic programs enjoyed at Dutch Fork.

Coach Knotts spoke to the group on how this talk gave him an opportunity to reflect back on his life and career to find what he wanted to tell us this morning. He feels that it’s the player he has had the pleasure and pain to coach over his career that is what gives him his sense of accomplishment.

After a very successful career in high school coaching, in 2004 he was afforded the opportunity to coach at the college level as the quarterback coach with his alma mater- Duke. His experience at Duke helped him realize that it is the relationship and bonds he built with the high school students as their coach that brings him the most pleasure. He was able to resign from Duke and return to Independence High as their head football coach again.

Coach Knotts shared some stories of past players that stand out for him. One player is Chris Leake that played quarterback for Independence from 1999 to 2002 and started the 109 winning game streak for Independence HS. After high school and some trials within the weight room and learning to play as a member of the united team, Leake went on to play for Florida and win a national title for them. Leake now plays professional football in the Canadian Football League.

Another player that stood out for Coach Knotts was Jeff Romanelli who came to the team as a young, inexperienced player and developed into a strong player as a middle linebacker. Through the years at school Romanelli’s life changed and he got into some trouble with the law and was arrested for selling drugs. This came as a shock to the coaching staff and forced coach Knotts to ban the player from the team.

Also standing out in his memory is Dewitt Dixon. Dixon’s mother came to coach Knotts asking him to take a look at her son and see what could be made out of the young player. Dixon was raised in a less than perfect environment with a single parent. By becoming involved with the football program, Dixon found his ability to become a model student and athlete, ultimately winning a scholarship to Elizabeth City State College and earning his degree.

There are several other stories of football and his players the coach could have shared, but time ran out on us and we had to end the meeting. Coach did field one question as to his opinion of the media’s treatment of high school football. The coach’s answer was that the media is playing a “not-so good” role in the recruitment of high school players. The recruitment has become more of a business for agents and less about the development of the sport and its players and the media is helping to promote this environment.

We all thank coach Knotts for coming to speak with us and wish him a great year for the football team at Dutch Fork and a successful job building an even better Athletic Department at Dutch Fork.

September 8, 2010

President Judy called the meeting to order at 7:45 a.m. The invocation was provided by Nathan Ballentine. Our guest list this week included Pete Sercer of the St. Andrews Rotary Club. Lyman Whitehead provided us with a healthy dose of Health & Happiness.

Announcements:
• President Judy will be attending the Foundation Seminar next Wednesday morning, leaving Past President Bill Danielson in charge.
• The next Board meeting is scheduled for 9/16/10, 7:30 a.m., at Panera Bread. All Club members are invited.
• The induction of new member Mark Boone is scheduled for 9/22/10.
• Secretary Jay will be sending out the proof of the 2010-11 Rotary Year Book for members to review by email. Please let Jay know if there are final edits still to be made.
• Members were reminded of the DJJ Demolition Celebration being held on at 10:00 a.m. on 9/10/10. Everyone is invited.

Our Classification talk this week was provided by Sergeant-at-Arms Darren Bouknight.

President-Elect Jeanette Coulter introduced out guest speaker, Alan Shoemaker. Alan is a member of the St Andrews Rotary club and a frequent visitor our club. Alan provided a fascinating slide show and commentary about his 3½ week trip through Imperial China and into Tibet. He shared everything about the country from history, to food, to shopping, to culture. Alan described his travel experience to Imperial China as full of pageantry and color, and he highly recommended the trip to others. Alan concluded his presentation by answering questions from members.

The Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club presented a $2,000 check to the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission for its Meals on Wheels program. Volunteers for the Recreation Commission deliver meals to home bound older adults five days per week. The Seven Oaks Park delivers about 150 meals per week. Rotarians from the Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club participate as volunteers in this delivery program. The monetary donation was enhanced through a District Simplified Grant from District 7770.

Cruise Night-August 3rd.

The Irmo-Lake Murray Rotary hosted a unique social event for our District #7770 Governor, Rick Moore. The Rotary club joined with the Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce for a cruise on board the yacht, the Spirit of Lake Murray. The Rotary Club was treated to a wonderful natural event, watching the Purple Martins nesting on Bomb Island which is a rest stop on their yearly migration route. Bomb Island is situated in Lake Murray which is the tourism crown jewel of the greater Irmo and Columbia areas. The cruise combined several unique features, a chance to introduce non-Rotarians to a local club, a trip to a World War II landmark and an inspiring glimpse into the natural world. All of the Rotarians enjoyed a very relaxing social event and a glimpse into a seldom seen part of the natural world.

August 18, 2010 Lake Murray – Irmo Rotary Club Minutes

The August 18th Lake Murray – Irmo Rotary Club meeting was started with an invocation by John Adair and the customary Pledge of Allegiance. Health and Happiness was lead by Lyman Whitehead including many Happy Dollars, Group Announcements and Dr. Robinson’s discussion of the Rotary Magazine.

President Judy Johnson introduced Mr. Dan Hennigman who is a Honorary Lexington County Sheriff and is very involved with the Lexington County Shrriff’s Department as well as several other important community organizations to include the Lexington Rotary Club, Honor Flight and the National Safety Council. Mr. Hennigan then introduced the day’s main speaker Lexington County’s Sherriff James Metts.

Sheriff Metts was the nation’s youngest elected sheriff at age 25 in 1972 and has been in office ever since. Sheriff Metts holds a degree in Criminal Justice and a Doctorate Degree in Education. He stated that his main focus for his office is Quality of Life and Customer service for the members of the Lexington County community. Sheriff Metts is an active Rotarian with the Lexington club. He stated that Quality of Life is a big draw for people coming to Lexington County; it has the number One schools, number One recreational opportunities, superior communities and the people of the county are incredible. However, it is not like that everywhere. Within a few miles of his area of jurisdiction are communities that are unsafe, filled with drugs and quickly deteriorating. Sherriff Metts promised that “that will not happen with me in charge of law enforcement if Lexington County! Law enforcement has been vested with the responsibility to maintain the high quality of living that citizens of the county enjoy and he and his department will work to maintain this quality of living in all of Lexington County’s communities.”

He will accomplish this maintenance through superior Customer Service for the citizens of Lexington. He encourages the citizens to become involved with the Sheriff’s Department to help maintain our quality of life and let undesirable characters know that they are not welcomed in our county. One way this involvement can be done is through the Reserve Deputy Program in Lexington County. This program used unpaid volunteers to work with the sheriff’s department alongside the staff. So far in 2010 the Reserve Deputy Program has handles over 6,000 cases and saved the county taxpayers countless dollars.

Sheriff Metts went on to introduce his Quality of Life Team members present. First was the Captain and new Region Commander for the North Region which includes Irmo, Chapin, Cayce and West Columbia - Captain Lee Marshall. Captain Marshall has been an involved member of our community since attending Irmo Elementary, Middle and High Schools. He reminded our own Jack Terrell how at age 13 Captain Marshall worked the time clock at the Seven Oaks Recreation Center with Mr. Terrell as his boss. Captain Marshall has been newly assigned to his current position in command of over 50 employees after serving for several years throughout the Sheriff’s Department in many positions. Captain Marshall added that he sees the desire for maintaining the Quality of Life throughout his department and it cannot be accomplished without community involvement. He sees his main focus and responsibility as a problem solver in our community and if we need to reach him with a problem his phone number is (803) 407-8437.

Emily Stanek, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, was the guest speaker at the Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary club on August 11, 2010. A Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar is a college student chosen to spend an academic year in another country to serve as an Ambassador for Rotary, their home country and their home community while taking classes at a university. A 2008 graduate of USC, Emily recently returned to the USA after studying at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in the Masters in Communications program. She represented Rotary and South Carolina by speaking to Rotary and Rotaract clubs, and participating in numerous community service projects in the Monterrey area. Her presentation summarized her experiences in Mexico and served as a thank-you to the Rotary club for providing the opportunity.

Jeff Baldwin discussed the assignments of committees for the Tour De Lake in April, 2011 and ask for volunteers. Rod Funderburk introduced our speaker, Emily Stanek, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. She shared with us the highlights of her experiences as a student and Ambassador for Rotary for the USA and South Carolina while in Mexico.

We had a great crowd last week to hear our District Governor, Rick Moore address our club. Thanks for all of you who were able to make the meeting and a special thanks to those of you who brought a visitor. Although Rick talked about a number of goals for our District, three major areas were emphasized. First, as a Rotarian, each of us should remember the motto, "Service above self" and do our part to serve our community. There are many projects that our Rotary Club supports (e.g., DJJ Interact, Dutch Fork Interact, Nursery Road Elementary, Adopt a Highway, Meals on Wheels, just to name a few). If you would like to get more involved with any of these projects, please let me know.

Attracting new members and keeping our existing new members is a second major area of focus. Unfortunately, statistics show that most clubs lose 10% of their members each year due to a variety of factors. The District has asked us to grow our members by at least one person. We started the year with 61 members so by the end of June we need to have at least 62 members. Please help us reach this goal by bringing a prospective member to one of our meetings. And when you see a visitor, please do your part in introducing yourself and making them feel welcome. Remember, each month you can bring one prospective member to the meeting and their breakfast is paid by the club.

Finally, the third major area of focus is the Paul Harris Fellows. Ginny will be discussing her plans to support this effort in the weeks ahead. She is going to need all of our support as we work together to support our local and international projects.

District Governor Rick Moore was our special guest today. He was introduced by Rod Funderburk our Assistant Governor.

DG Rick told the club something of Ray Klingsmith the current President of Rotary International and this year's theme: "Building Communities and Bridging Continents"

Since DG Rick is in the rubber business he pulled out an ORANGE (He's a Clemson man) rubber ball and used it as an object lesson to illustrate that it was always moving and could not sit STILL." Rotary is like that", he said, "We should never sit still, but always be moving about living out our motto Service Above Self".

In a more spirited manner Rick recognized Beetle Bailey who was wearing, as usual, his bright orange Clemson shirt. Rick said, "Now isn't that a shirt, or not?" Jim Wellman (noted Carolina man), sitting close by, gave a quick rejoinder "Or NOT!!" Good chuckles followed from through out the room. All to confirm one of DG Rick's main points of his speech: Fellowship in Rotary is important.

Rick titled the subject of his speech: Building Stronger Clubs (In other words GROW!)

He stated there were FIVE CORE values to do this:

1. Fellowship: Two district wide socials will be planned this year. The first to be at the Citadel October 2, 2010. The Second to be next April 2011. Details to be announced later.

2. Membership: North America Rotary Clubs are in a 10 % decline. Not good!

His goal is for each District Club (78 clubs) to gain net one new member this year. Rick then presented to our wondrous Past President, Ginny Barr, and a "Membership Recognition Award" for her fine work in this area last year.

3. Foundation: Last year District 7770 raised $1,060,000.00 for The Rotary Foundation. WOW! That is a lot. This coming year our District will receive back from The Rotary Foundation $446,055.00. These monies will fund our Polio, Peace Builder, Scholarships, GSE Matching Grants and District Simplified Grant programs.

At this point, DG Rick called President Judy Johnson forward and presented her with a $1,000.00 to be used in our "Meals on Wheels" program.

HEY, I LIKE THIS GUY RICK MOORE! If he is going to keep handing out checks like that...let's invite him back.

4. Leadership Training: I don't know what he said here. Things were getting a bit muddy in my head. The next thing I heard was "Pirates Know More" and Rod Funderburk started walking around passing out mini chocolate candy bars. Then DISTRICT CONFERENCE was coming strong from DG Rick. Soon (it was 8:30) Rick said AMEN and Prez Judy thanked him with all her grace and the bell was RUNG!!!

I kept sitting at my table wondering what the FIFTH core value was. Maybe it was the candy bar. I asked President Judy, "What was the fifth core value?" She smiled, patted me on the head and said, "You're a good man, but where did you get that mustache?"

Well that was Rotary today. Wasn't it great? Being a USC grad, I sure liked the color of DG Rick's new coat. So long...John Adair, Reporting

President Judy Johnson called the July 21 meeting of the Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club to order.

Jeanette Coulter discussed plans for the Lake Murray cruise next week.

A word of special thanks was expressed to Larry Stohs for his work in putting together such an attractive and informative bulletin for our club for this year.

President Judy explained etiquette recommendations involved in standing to honor the District Governor, who will be presenting our program next week.

Dr. Eddie Robinson gave a classification talk.

Ginny Barr introduced our speakers Captain Joseph Pellicci and Ray Carci. They accepted a check from our club from the Tour de Lake proceeds, as they were partners in this project. They then presented a very interesting program on the Special Olympics and especially on the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics. The Torch Run began in Kansas in 1981 and has spread to 35 countries around the world. This project raises money and awareness for Special Olympics, which makes a big difference in the lives of many involved athletes.

Ginny Barr and Patty Cavanaugh presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Jim Browning, husband of Ros Browning.

Our speaker was Bill McCrary, Founder and CEO of Strategic Partners, a Columbia based professional service firm that specializes in leadership and sales force development. Strategic Partners is affiliated with Sandler Training.

Mr. McCrary stated that sales are made when expectations are made or exceeded. He gave us several systems, processes, and strategies to succeed. Among them were: (1) to be a person one can trust; (2) be honest and manage expectations; and (3) that customers buy for their reasons, not yours. He also said that all people are not potential customers for you.

After a brief question and answer period, the meeting was adjourned.

We had a great meeting this morning and, thanks to Scott Middleton, President and CEO of AGAPE, we learned a lot about Medicare and Medicaid. Minutes to meeting 7-7-10

President Judy Johnson called the meeting to order and the meeting was opened with prayer by John Adair. Three guests were introduced, Marshall, Sarah Bickler and Kelly Payne brought a guest. Health and Happiness was delivered by Lyman Whitehead.

President Judy brought attention to the article about our club in the Irmo News. Announcements were the visit by the District Governor on August Forth, and a possible evening cruise on Lake Murray the evening before that.

A meeting of the board at Panera at 7:30 am on Thursday was announced.

Rotary Leadership Institute is here in Columbia.

This was club assembly day. President Judy reminded us that this is not a breakfast club but a service club. Bill Danielson has offered to try to find ways to get past club presidents more involved. The officers and club members with supporting roles were introduced and then the meeting broke up into committees for brainstorming about ways to do more service.

Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club Minutes—June 30, 2010

Rotary Club President Ginny Barr presided over her last meeting as Club President on June 30, 2010 and a number of presentations and awards were made at the meeting.

Jim Wellman was recognized for his birthday followed by Lynn Richards, who requested volunteers to provide the invocations at club meetings. Joel Collins presented Maria Hargrave with the Paul Harris Fellow award.

A classification talk was delivered by Kevin Meetze, who was raised in Irmo , attended the Citadel and served in the U.S. Army before returning to the Irmo area. He and his wife have twins and he volunteers time to coach baseball. Beetle Bailey presented a banner from the Atlantic City Rotary Club, which he recently visited.

President Ginny acknowledged the Seven Oaks Park personnel for hosting the Rotary meetings and presented a check for $1,000 from the club to support senior programs provided by the Recreation Center. She also provided plant seedlings for all members in attendance and then recognized all of the officers and club directors for this year. She noted a number of accomplishments for the year, including development of a leadership program, a database and web site, improvements and modifications in billing procedures, providing support for a South African orphanage, the polio plus program($3,000), $1,000 for the Haiti Rebuild program, funding for the Babcock Center, and the YMCA triathlon. There were 17 new Paul Harris fellows this year, and the club has 100% of its members as sustaining members to support the Paul Harris Foundation. The club continued to support the Interact Club and a video was produced by the DJJ Interact Club. Three members had perfect attendance for over 15 years —Lyman Whitehead, Jeanette Coulter, and Lynn Campbell.

President Ginny presented Jim Wellman with an apron acknowledging his “grillmaster status” as the premier outdoor chef, the Club’s leadership award was presented to Jeff Baldwin, who coordinated the Tour de Lake event, which raised $3,500 and involved 90% of the club membership. The Rotarian of the Year award was presented to Rod Funderburk, the 10^th president of the club, who will also be the assistant District Governor next year.

Rod administered the oath of office for incoming President Judy Johnson. President Judy then recognized the officers and the club directors for the new year. The new officers include vice president Larry Stohs, president elect Jeanette Coulter, secretary Jay Seward, treasurer Reid Danielson, Sergeant At Arms Darren Bouknight, Immediate past president Ginny Barr, and By-Laws and Insurance Jeff Allen. The new club directors are Rod Funderburk, administration, Jacqueline Kleynenberg, public relations, Michael Cromer, membership, Ginny Barr, foundation, Bentley Murrell, fund raising, Jim Wellman, club service, Chris King, small gifts and grants committee.

President Ginny then called on Rev. Jim Gadsden who delivered an inspiring and heart-warming invocation which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance given in unison by the Club.

President Ginny then called on Darren Bouknight to introduce our guests including the CEO of the Beetle Bailey household, his wife Debra.

Health and Happiness was delivered eloquently by Jacqueline as she told us about "Honey, what's for dinner?" If you weren't there you should call her to hear it. She then asked if there were any Happy Dollars and HD's were volunteered by Joel Collins, Stan Bugner, Beetle, Skey Caskey, Rev. Gadsden, Larry Stohs, and Jacqueline herself as she told us she was happy because her Dad's surgery had gone well.

President Ginny announced the dates of the next two Rotary Board Meetings, the first one on this coming Friday, the last meeting of the past year's board, and the second one the following Thursday, the first meeting of next year's board. She then announced that our Club had sent flowers to the home of John Hanson in honor of the newest family addition to their household.

President Ginny then called on Beetle to come forward with Melissa Hulon, where Melissa was inducted into the Club and then announced as the newest Rotarian.

President Ginny then called on Kevin Meetze to introduce Michael Davis with Boys Farm, near Newberry, SC. Michael told us he and his wife had originally come to Boys Farm to be house parents, living in one of the cottages with 6-8 boys. Their boys and all of the other boys living in the other cottages are taught values of family and friends, discipline and love, teamwork, manners, hard work, education, caring for our environment and animals, and respect for themselves and others -- while emphasizing a close relationship with God.

Michael then called on Kevin to come up and share his personal experiences with Boys Farm. Five years ago Kevin and his family decided to get involved at Boys Farm and is currently helping coordinate the construction of what is called The Pond House, a modest house that will allow parents of the boys to visit and have a place to stay on campus.

At the end of the presentation, our member John Adair volunteered to give them a piano when The Pond House is completed.

The meeting convened at 7:45 after 15 minutes of social time. Thirty members and one guest were in attendance. President Ginny gaveled the meeting into session, followed by a prayer and The Pledge of Allegiance. The first order of business was Health and Happiness by Jacqueline, which included the announcement of birthdays (Jeff and Mike, the same day!) and the anniversaries (Baldir, take note!). A joke from Larry Stohs was delivered by Jacqueline.

During Happy Dollars, Joel Collins read a letter from his 98 year old uncle and the club got an update on the status of JoAnne Whitehead’s hospitalization. Members confirmed that a process for getting flowers to her was in place.

A past Rotary scholarship recipient thanked the club for her scholarship as she recounted her success at Clemson.

The visit by Bernie Riedel and the presentation of Paul Harris Fellow pins was announced for the following week.

Harold Crawford did a classification talk.

President Ginny introduced the speaker, Chuck McKay. Chuck’s presentation focused on marketing, and the differences between transactional shoppers and relational shoppers. Transactional client are in search of the best price and drive many interactions by sellers. Relational shoppers seek the best service and value long term associations. Each of these types of buyers need different advertising strategies…the appeal to one type will not necessarily appeal to the other type. So it is important for merchants to understand their market and clients as they do advertising.

Minutes for Rotary Club of Lake Murray/Irmo May 5, 2010 meeting.

The meeting was opened by President Ginny Barr. The invocation was given by Lyn Richards. There were three visitors announced, and Jacqueline Kleyenenberg gave a health and happiness segment.

George Staples made a presentation of four new Rotary banners from clubs near Durban, South Africa. Patty Cavanaugh was recognized for her service in keeping up our banners and creating new ones.

The speaker was Tommy Windsor, who is the Vice Chairman of the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority, who spoke on issues surrounding the current public transportation in the midlands.

Jay Seward opened the meeting and discussed the success of the bike rally. He asked all Rotarians to take the time and capture their thoughts in a survey. Ginny Barr announced that Rotary would be participating in the Lake Murray Cruise, on the Spirit of Lake Murray, Friday at 6, tickets are $39.50. Several Rotarians were recognized for their acts of service in the club: Bob Berry, Ray Hunt, Michael Cromer, Chris King, Blount Shepard, Marylou Stinson, Rod Funderburk, Kevin Meetze, Jeff Baldwin, Carey Hite and Barry Johns. The recipients were awarded a Tour De Lake frame for their involvement in planning the bike race. Ginny gave special “Wizard of Oz” awards for acts of service in preparation of the Tour De Lake event. Jay Seward (Tin Man) received the “heart of gold” award, Darren Bouknight (The Lion) received the “courage” award, Rod Funderburk (Scarecrow) received the Intellectual Brains award and Jeff Baldwin (The Oz) received the “Dedication” award.

The keynote speaker was Ms. Sue Williams, Chief Executive Officer, of The Children’s Trust of South Carolina. The Mission of her organization is to prevent child abuse and neglect by promoting healthy, nurturing relationships between children and adults. The organizations vision is that every child will grow up in a safe, loving and stable family. The Children’s Trust of South Carolina will lead the state in building public will and momentum to realize this vision. The overall well-being of children in our state ranks 45^th in the nation according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 2009 Kids Count Report. A child is born into poverty every 50 minutes and more than 12,000 of children in South Carolina are confirmed as abused or neglected. Many members, including president Ginny Barr, then mentioned Carolina Ale House for its "heavy lifting" contribution in agreeing to provide 150 boxed lunches for the bikers in the upcoming "Tour de lake" event.

Mr. Jeff Baldwin then reminded everyone that April 21 will be the final meeting before the Tour de Lake event.

The meeting of March 10, 2010 was called to order by President Ginny Barr.

President Ginny recognized Stan Bugner who led the invocation, after which the Pledge of Allegiance was given by the body of the Club.

President Ginny recognized Kevin Meetze who advised the Club that he was working on a cabin where visiting parents could stay at the Boys Farm in Newberry, SC. He was seeking support and construction assistance, both financially and manual labor.

President Ginny commented on the article in our current Rotarian Magazine regarding our Club's work with DJJ. She requested that, once read, members donate their magazines to DJJ Interact Club members. She also advised that our next meeting will be held at DJJ.

President Ginny turned the meeting over to Marylou Stinson who recognized the Teachers of the Year for Lexington/Richland School District V. Stan Bugner then introduced guest speaker, Dr. Jim Rex, SC Superintendent of Schools.

Superintendent Rex provided a current update on our schools throughout South Carolina. He touched on items that he classified as best of times and worst of times. While he commented on the progress that had been made, Dr. Rex indicated that there was much more work to be done. He commended our Club for the annual recognition of the Teachers of the Year in our school district.

His job is to educate animal owners, seize and prosecute when necessary. He also sponsors spay and neuter clinics. Cruelty Investigation Division is a non-profit and runs off donations from the community. His division receives no government funds.

Minutes of 2-3-10 meeting

President Ginny Barr called the meeting to order. Barry Johns gave the invocation. “Health and Happiness” was led by Jacqueline Kleynenberg. Rotarian Jeanette Coulter and her husband, Jerry will be celebrating their 30^th wedding anniversary this week and Chris Spearman and his wife will also be celebrating their anniversary. John Lafond, District representative, recognized Ben Herritage for becoming a member of the Bequest Society for his generous donation to the Permanent Fund. Maria Hargrave gave her classification speech.

Judy Johnson reminded members of the upcoming “Pins for Polio” tournament scheduled for Saturday, February 27 from 2-5 at Anchor Lanes. Team sponsors and bowlers are needed and 100% member participation is being requested. Brochures for the “Tour de Lake” Bicycle rally were distributed along with sponsor forms. Team leaders of the “tour de Lake” were asked to stay for a meeting immediately following this morning’s meeting.

Representative Nathan Ballentine introduced the guest speaker. Mary Louise Resch, Government Relations and grant Specialist from Harvest Hope Food Bank gave an excellent presentation. Her organization serves 20 counties in South Carolina and is the largest Food Bank in SC. In 2009 the Harvest Hope Food Bank served 725,567 families in need which was a 76% increase since 2008. This number represented 3,158,487 individuals which was also a 144% increase compared to last year.

Lake Murray –Irmo Rotary Club Meeting Report for January 6, 2010

The Meeting was called to order by President Ginny Barr promptly at 7:30 AM. The invocation was offered by John Adair. The day’s speaker, Dr. Kay Shaw, was introduced by President Barr. Dr.Shaw’s subject was “Personal Pathways” , a systematic approach to affording guidance to public school students in selecting a course of study which aligns with their vocational interests. She provided interesting insights into how the students can be guided in their course of study to obtain the maximum benefit of their education in preparing them for vocations that they indicate an interest and Aptitude in. Dr. Shaw explained the “Personal Pathways” approach to guiding students in their course of studies so that their education facilitates their preparation for pursuit of their vocational interests and help them achieve professional capabilities that align with their Inherent interests and inclinations. Student records of career interests were shown for some 16 career areas. The top areas for the past two years were Health Sciences, the Arts and Science, Technology and Engineering.

Using this systematic approach to student guidance is a means of giving students an individualized approach to graduation plans that matches their interests and capabilities.

Several announcements regarding club programs were made; Blount Sheppard informed our group the Adopt A Highway project for this Saturday is postponed due to the expected weather. Jim Wellman asked for volunteers to sign up to deliver Meal On Wheels.

President Ginny recognized our Club members with perfect attendance records. For this past year those recognized were:

We then broke into planning groups for the “Club Assembly” to prepare for the great bike ride project.

Notes from the Lake Murray Irmo Rotary Club 12-2-09 Meeting

After President Ginny Barr called the meeting to order, Lynn Campbell led in prayer. Darren Bouknight introduced the guests. Jacqueline Kleynenberg led the group in Health and Happiness and a time of Happy Dollars. During Happy Dollars, Jeff Baldwin provided an update on Bill Kopelman. Joel Collins provided the club with information on the Rotary Foundation and Patty Cavanaugh handed out individual foundation contribution status pages. Joel challenged the club to become 100% Paul Harris Fellow contributors.

The last adopt-a-highway for 2009 will be held this Saturday, December 5. Please meet at Blount Sheperd’s office at 8:00 am. The club Christmas party will be held Monday, December 14 at 6:30 pm at the Chestnut Hills Club House.

Our speaker for the morning was Dr. Burk Dial, who talked about the Palmetto Richland Gamma Knife program. Richland has had the only gamma knife in the state for ten years. The gamma knife offers an alternative to whole brain radiation treatment for metastasized tumors in the brain. The gamma knife provides 192 low dosage penetrations which converge on the tumor providing a high dosage radiation to the tumor without damaging the cells through which the laser passes. According to Dr. Dial, whole brain radiation treatment can only be applied to a patient one time while gamma knife radiation treatment can be applied multiple times. The accuracy of the gamma knife is less than one millimeter and the success rate is very high. We need to thank Maris Hargrave for arranging this very informative program.

Speaker:

Dr. Berg Superintendent of Lexington/Richland District 5 was the speaker.

He indicated that he was enjoying the job and may stay on for a year or so longer. He stated that the school district was all about people. They had good people working in the district. They pay good salaries and they have high expectations from their employees. Said the schools were in good shape but need to address concerns at Leaphart, Seven Oaks and Haribson West. With the help of Helen Anderson director of instruction they were addressing those concerns. For example, they had moved Barbara Brockhart one of their best elementary principals to Haribson West. There was also good news on the construction from the bond approval. They were able to borrow money at 1% or less and the bids on the construction projects were as low as he had seen in 25 years.

Rotary opened with a prayer from John Adair. Although spiritual in nature, I could have sworn he was praying for the return of the GOP in New Jersey and Virginia! Or, was that just my imagination.

Our illustrous fundraiser, "par excellance", Jay Seward discussed our first Earth Day Bike Race next April. Plans are well underway and we need to give Jay all the support we can. A sign up sheet was passed around with many volunteer committee's for this race and we need to all sign up! 100% participation for this event, Ride or Work, which is it? Hopefully, this will be our biggest fundraiser yet.

Lyman Whitehead, subbing in with health and happiness, rambled on about something funny, but I must have dozed off. Thanks Lyman.

President Ginny acknowledged the fine work by Chip Lyerly for shadow day last week. We had a great turn out with 26 high school kids! Great job Chip!

A reminder, next week, November 11th is Vocational week. We will not be meeting at our usual spot but, instead, at the Fire Department behind Bi-Lo on St. Andrews Rd near Seven Oaks. Please park in the Bi - Lo parking lot and walk over. We will be provided a great tour of the Trauma Helicopter, which, hopefully, none of us or our loved ones will ever need as well as a presentation by the trauma specialists. This should be a very informative session so please try to make it. Yes, breakfast will be served!

Member updates included a web page for Bill Kopelman, www.caringbridge.org, for up to date info on his battle with cancer. Also, unfortunately, we learned of the death of Patty Cavanaugh's mother. Please remember Patty and her family in your prayers.

Our classification talk was delivered by Mai Li Munoz Adams, who is a fairly new member and is chasing her three children around when not raising money for the USC Foundation, which, by the way is her full time job. You gotta love a lady who was born in Queens (thats New York City folks) and raised in Tampa, Fl. and ended up in Columbia, SC!

Rod Funderburk introduced our speaker, Courtney Gibson for her report on Quito, Ecuador. You may remember Courtney was an Ambassadorial Scholarship winner and has spent the last 90 days there studying and serving others. Courtney discussed her two main service organizations while there, "Salesian Foundation for the Children of the Street" and "The Foundation for Education and International Volunteerism" which, you may remember is building a library. Courtney presented a check, on behalf of our club, to that organization. She also described how wonderful the people were and what a great host family she had. Rotary work at its finest.

Meeting Opened

Chip Lyerly spoke to the club concerning “Shadow Day” and thanked all of the students and members that participated.

President Ginny Barr informed the Rotary members that they would be receiving a survey to be completed and returned to Jay Seward.

Judy Johnson introduced our speaker, Georgia Doran, Director of Career Education, USC Moore School of Business

- Mrs. Doran spoke briefly on USC Moore School of Business stating that they were recently able to raise over $41 million and received a match from Darla Moore of an additional $45 Million. To date Darla Moore has donated $70 million to the school.

- Mrs Doran stated that this is the first time four generations of people have been in the workplace at the same time. She concentrated her speech on the newest generation, Millennial Generation, and how it differs from other generations.

- The Millenial Generation is comprised of people ranging in age from 7 to 29. It is estimated that there are 80 million people in the Millenial Generation compared to 75 million baby boomers.

- In their lifetime they will average 7 to 15 jobs between 3 separate careers.

- They are the first generation to grow up with digital media. They are social, civic minded, family focused and have high expectations.

- Their lives have been shaped by major events including 9/11, Columbine and the shootings at Virginia Tech

- The Millenial Generation sees time as being fluid since they can update their news and communications immediately as opposed to other generations who view time as segmented.

George Staples reminded us about the project in Durban, South Africa for children with AIDS. We partnered with the Spring Valley Club to establish the project with $3,000. With the Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation we now have $21,000.00 toward the project.

April 24th is Earth Day and the date of our Bicycle Rally fund raiser.

Nathan Ballentine introduced our speaker today. His name is Darren Morris he is the owner of SORD a security company that has taken him all over the world. Darren has spent 19 years in law enforcement. He is like a big body guard! Guarding folks the likes of Josh Grogan. He has been anything from patrolman to SWAT division commander. Drug raids to felony arrests.

Darren got to train in Brazil where he goes back on occasions. He started his business full time in 2004 the same year he got in to the music business (Keeping Rock Stars Safe). He has been to the pentagon for formal training on National Security, started another business, Columbia Fight House (MMA) and is also an Actor. Very busy fellow.

Good morning. This morning's attendance was down because only 38 folks were present (including guests). Special Thanks to Nathan Ballentine who arranged for Darren Norris, VP of SORD International , to be our speaker this morning. Next week remember we will be meeting at Alodia's for breakfast and a discussion on what it takes to run a restaurant. Minutes from 9/16/09 Rotary Meeting

President Ginny Barr opened the September 16, 2009 meeting, and called on

Maria Hargrove for the invocation. Lyman Whitehead did health and

happiness and happy dollars.

Announcements were made about upcoming meetings at Alodias' Italian

Restaurant, and the Air Ambulance facility behind BiLo. Board meeting

will be Friday at Panera Bread.

Carey Hite was recognized for his work establishing a new web page for our

Jim Wellman informed those members working at the Okra Strut when they

needed to be at their post on Friday September 25th.

The speaker for the day was Mike Briggs the CEO of SC Central Alliance.

This agency is composed of 12 counties around the midlands along with the

City of Columbia. This alliance does market research, site development,

and economic impact analysis for industry and since 1994 has seen 7.5 billion

dollars invested in this area with the creation of 47,000 jobs. For 2009,

102 million dollars has been invested with 863 new jobs created.

Teresa Miley opened our August 26 meeting with prayer and then the group Pledge ofAllegiance. Zeke Riddle enlightened the club with Health and Happiness of a storyabout "Common Sense" and Lyman Whitehead then quizzed members with questionsrelating to the August Rotarian Magazine.Two club announcements came from Jim Wellman and Kelly Payne. Jim informed membersof a new service project the club has committed to this year: Meals on Wheels. EveryThursday starting at 11:15 one (or two members) will need to meet at Seven Oaks Parkto receive the meals to be delivered that day. The route should only take 30-45minutes. Kelly Payne spoke about the upcoming Interact Project. Her students willbe at the Five Points Fountain from 12-4pm Saturday.Before our guest speaker was introduced, Teresa Miley gave her classification talk.Among other things, Teresa shared with us that she was reared in the LowCountry, amother of 3 boys (19, 16, 12), has a State Farm Agency in Irmo and has been a clubmember since 2005.Rod Funderburk then introduced Ashley Rhoderick, Rotary Scholar. Ashley is a 2008graduate of USC with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

The club sponsored here witha Rotary Culture Scholarship that allowed Ashley to experience life in Cairo, Egyptfor 3 to 4 months.The first thing Ashley noticed when she arrived to Cairo was the heat and how largethe city is. During the daytime there are 30 million people in the city and at nightthe number drops to 20 million people. Her host Rotary Club was the Wadi DeglaRotary Club (Ashley brought us a banner from their club) and she had severalwonderful memories to share. She crossed the Nile twice each day for school (whereshe spent 5 hours each day learning the language). Ashley experienced Ramadan(fasting from sun-up to sun-down), went to Alexandria, Siwa (an oasis in the desert,30 minutes from Syria), and had her dad come visit when she went to Luxor and Aswan.Her favorite part of her stay was time spent in The Sinai and the thing she wantedto do most was scuba diving in the Red Sea (which she did!). Of course, she saw thepyramids and experienced life in the city by riding in a "women's car" on the metroand seeing how retail is done on a "cash basis." (She only used her debit/creditcards at ATMs to get cash).Her class had students from around the world (Sweden,Australia, Pakistan), and during their time together she learned an Irish Dance andsoaked up all the culture she could by trying various dishes (they often didn't eatdinner until 10pm!)Ashley plans to continue her experience overseas by working with Campus Crusade forChrist while in Lebanon.It's obvious, she is a bright young lady with a great future of serving others! Ourclub sponsorship has not only benefited Ashley but others she will touch throughouther life!

We were pleased to have Samantha Martin our Rotary Scholar to Northern Ireland speak to us today. Samantha was recruited by Rod Funderburk. He does such a fine job offinding the right scholar for our club. Today we heard from one the best of our Rotary Scholars. Samantha truly exhibited the purpose of Rotary. She met 16 folks in her class and went to some of their homes. She attended Rotarymeeting frequently and represented our club and Rotary with class and dignity.

Samantha crossed cultural relationships and befriended folks from differentcultures. She sought out mentors of the older generation to help her grasp theissues in Northern Ireland. She did not get bored as she traveled to Morocco, Scotland and France. What I picked up from her talk is that she came to understand the problems inNorthern Ireland and reflected her gratefulness for our Rotary Club and Rotaryin'tl..

President Barr called upon Bill Danielson to open the meeting with a word of prayer followed by the pledge of allegiance. Darren Bouknight, Sergeant- at-Arms, then introduced the visitors. Ben Herritage introduced his daughter and Zek announced that Bob Berry 20 year with the club.

Zek continued the meeting with the “table to table” happy dollar. Lynn Campbell and Si Amick gave a happy dollar to announce their wives’ birthdays. Bob Berry topped the happy dollar with his wedding band story which was short of a miracle. Bob, this is proof that your marriage was destiny.

Joel Collins reminded us of the “Constitution Day Program” which will be aired on September 18, 2009 at 2:00. Please ask Joel what channel as I don’t remember if it was announced. President Ginny reminded us all to continue supporting the Cart Fund which supports Alzheimer’s research. Jim Wellman announced that the Okra Strut was just around the corner and we would be manning a ticket booth this year. Please sign up as we need 12 people. Also, we will not be doing the pictures with Okra Man, but individual are welcome to do their own. Any members with young children are welcome to ride the float in the parade.

Rotary youth exchange training will be September the 17^th. Please sign up…..

Darren Bouknight gave a wonderful classification speech. It is always nice to learn more about the personal lives of our members.

Our speaker was Chief Buck of the Irmo Police Department. It hard to believe that little Irmo has 25+ officers.

President Ginny thanked the Club for the opportunity to attend the Rotary International Convention in Birmingham England. She had a marvelous experience and gained new friendships in many countries. She presented the banner from the Rotary Club of Alford and Marble Thorpe in England.

President Ginny assisted by District Governor Alan Walters inducted our newest member, Jacqueline Kleynenberg. Alan recognized her sponsor, Larry Stohs, for his efforts in bringing Jacqueline to Rotary and noted a sponsor's role in getting new members involved in Rotary.

• President Ginny encouraged members to respond to the email survey sent out by Jay Seward via email asking for input into our fund raising efforts this coming year.
• President Ginny congratulated 3 club members for being recognized in the news; Theresa Miley received the Chairman’s Circle award from State Farm Insurance, Zeke Riddle started a new career with ERA Wilder Realty, and Chief Brian Buck’s Explorer Post 800 won Best Overall Post at the SC Association of Law Enforcement Explorers annual competition.
• President Ginny announced a new “job description” for our weekly meeting reporter. Reporters will now focus on reporting club announcements and business. Guest speakers need only be noted by name and topic. Weekly minutes may be written in a simple bullet format, rather than a narrative format. The goal is to make the job easier and less time involved. All members will be asked to serve as reporter, other than a few senior members who will exempt. Ginny volunteered to be the first reporter for the year. Next week, we will start at the top of the alphabet and work through the club.
• The Club presented RI Cultural Scholar Courtney Gibson with a $500 check as a contribution toward a service project she has started for the community in which she will be living in Ecuador. The funds will be used to equip the community library. Courtney has also collected books and supplies. She leaves for Ecuador in just a couple of weeks.
• Lyman Whitehead provided members with a classification speech.

Guest Speaker – Judy Johnson introduced our guest speaker, Dr. B.J. Simons. Dr. Simmons presented a very timely and informative program titled “H1N1; What’s in it for me?”

Minutes for Irmo-Lake Murray Rotary Meeting Wednesday July 1, 2009

The First meeting of the 2009-20108Rotary year began with the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.
Next Joel Collins was awarded the Rotary Benefactor Award for both himself and his wife.
President Eddie Robinson then discussed the Goals that were achieved during his term for 2007-2009.These included: Student mentoring with Nursery Road Elementary, Many Ambassador and Cultural scholarships awarded, Presidential and Governor Citations awarded, Silver Literacy Citation, 6 Paul Harris Fellows, 9 new members inducted, many projects with the Dutch Fork Interact club to name a few. President Eddie thanked the club for all of the members’ support throughout the year, specifically the Board Members. Each Board Member for the 08-09 year was announced: Public Relations Director was John Adair , Foundation was Patty Cavanaugh, Fundraising and Social Events was Emilee Keene, Long Range Planning was Larry Stohs, Service Projects was Jim Wellman and Club Administration was Dr. Judy Johnson. Officers for the 08-09 year were also announced and thanked with a nice Rotary memento Mug. The Board members were, Past President-Beetle Bailey, Treasurer – Jeanette Coulter , Seargent-at-arms – John Hanson, Secretary – Ben Heritage , President Elect – Ginny Barr. District Governor, George McConnell thanked the board members for their service.
President Eddie then recognized some Rotariians that were of special note for th e08-09 year: Lynn Campbell for his work with the Rotarian Magazine, Chris King for organizing the minutes, Lyman Whitehead for the Health and Happiness reports each week. Rotarian of the year for 08-09 was announced and we were honored with the news that we had Co-Rotarians of the year ; John Adiar and Judy Johnson were honored for all of their hard work with Rotary in the 08-09 year.
At this time President Eddie turned the meeting over to the new President Ginny Barr. There was a resounding standing ovation to honor and thank Eddie Robinson for a great year as president and Eddie was presented with e pin and nice Rotary Clock/plaque as a token of our thanks for his hard work.
President Ginny Barr then announced and inducted the new Board Members for the 09-10 year. Judy Johnson is the new President Elect, Jeanette Coulter is Vice President, Larry Stohs is Secretary, Seargent-at-arms is Darren Bouknight, Immediate Past President is Eddie Robinson and Bylaws/Insurance is Jeff Allen.
President Ginny Barr then discussed her plans for the 09-10 year and went over the Committees and committee members for the New Year. President Barr will work to have each Rotary Member as an active participant in one or more Committees. The club will have Club Meeting each Quarter for the Committees to work and plan their prospective activities for the year.
Darren Bouknight then come to the front and performed a brief introduction to the Rotary 7770 Database.

MINUTES – JUNE 24, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Eddie Robinson. Larry Stohs provided the invocation. Sergeant at Arms John Hanson introduced 3 guests from the St Andrews and Columbia Rotary Clubs. Lyman Whitehead then entertained those in attendance with health and happiness and a story about Le Mas Class and the health benefits of exercising during pregnancy by caddying for your loved ones on the golf course.

Lynn Campbell updated the group on the June edition of the Rotarian Magazine and noted articles of interest regarding Genocide in Cambodia, Cholera and efforts made to eradicate Polio.

Eddie noted the final LMIRC Board Meeting for this term will be held Thursday, June 25 at Panera Bread at 7:30am.

Classification talks were given by Chip Lyerly and Judy Johnson. Judy noted that Ginny Barr is in London, England attending the International Rotary Conference. Judy then introduced our speaker Josh Brickey of the Provost Academy.

The Provost Academy is a charter, public high school program (grades 9-12) offered online. Current enrollment is now at approximately 800 students. The program is currently approved by the State to accept 1,000 students, with plans to expand to 2,500 students in the next 1-2 years. The program is based on individualized, technology driven instruction with a primary focus on math and sciences. The program is intended for all types of students. All teachers are certified by the State of South Carolina. In addition to the standard curriculum, special needs based programs are also offered. Lessons include written, auditory and interactive flash instruction. Approximately 75% of the instruction can be done at the students own scheduling while the remaining 25% of instruction is set for mandatory time frames. Learning activities include field trips; virtual, online field trips, blogs and regional events. The program also offers students daily assessments with feedback to students, faculty, staff and parents.

The staff includes teachers, academic advisors, assignment graders and IT support for the online services provided. All students receive a free lap top and a $20.00 per month reimbursement for high speed internet service. The academy is free to South Carolina residents.

6/17/09 Rotary Meeting

President Robinson called the meeting to order. Skey Caskey delivered the invocation. Sergaent-at-arms John Hansen introduced the guests. Larry Stohs was designated as the honorary sergeant-at-arms as he continues to bring numerous guests to attend the meetings. Lyman Whitehead shared health and happiness.

President Robinson indicated that everything is going well with Bill Cobleman and informed the club that Bill sent a thank you card to the club for all of the support he has received.

Chief Ryan Butler introduced other members of the Irmo Police who explained the Explorer Program. The Explorer Program allows youth ages 14 to 20 to get hands on law enforcement experience. The club presented the Irmo Police with a donation to support the Explorer Program.

Ginny Barr introduced the speaker, Bernie Riedel. Bernie is the Foundation Chair for the District and past-president of the Hilton Head Rotary Club and former District Governer.

Bernie spoke to the club regarding the Future Vision Plan for the Rotary Foundation. A number of Districts were selected as part of a pilot group to implement the Future Vision Plan. Our District was not selected and therefore the Future Vision Plan will not be implemented in our District until 2013.

Bernie provided a history of the Foundation and questioned several club members on the history of the Foundaiton. Congratulations to John Adair who know which Rotary Club made the first donation to the Foundation.

The Foundation started with the purpose of doing good in the world. In 1947 the Foundation's endowment increased tremendously after the passing of Paul Harris.

Bernie then explained the Future Vision Plan in more detail. The Future Visions Plan calls for the Foundation to make 50% of its grants based on doing good in the world and 50% to further 6 areas of emphasis.

The 6 areas of emphasis are:

1. Water and Sanitation

2. Peace and Conflict Resolution

3. Disease Prevention and Treatment

4. Maternal and Child Welfare

5. Education and Literacy

6. Economic and Community Development

While John Adair wowed the club with his knowledge of who made the first contribution to the Rotary Foundation, he was not able to name two of the areas of emphasis when Bernie quized him to make sure he was paying attention.

THE ROTARY CLUB

MINUTES – JUNE 10, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Eddie Robinson. John Adair provided the invocation. Lyman Whitehead entertained us with health and happiness and a story about grandma stop at a red light with a “Honk if you Love Jesus” bumper sticker.

Kelly Payne presented two scholarships to two Dutch Fork Interact students. President Eddie Robinson advised us that board had approved a donation to SisterCare. A representative of SisterCare was present to accept the donation and informed the members of the work of SisterCare in helping victims of domestic violence.

Jenny introduced our two guest speakers, Representatives Nathan Ballentine and Chip Huggins who gave a presentation and answered questions about the recent legislative session.

The questions ranged over a number of topics. There were several questions regarding the federal stimulus package. Nathan and Chip pointed out that the package was not just 350 million but was two payments over two years for a total of 700 million. Nathan stated that he had originally voted against accepting the package and had confirmed with our school district that it would not cost the loss of teachers if the money was not received. Chip stated he was originally for it but had reservations. He stated he voted to sustain the governor’s veto because he felt it was going to be decided by the Supreme Court and the Attorney General had given an opinion at that time that the governor could prevail in the suit. Both representatives indicated that they felt the problems regarding the stimulus could possibly have been resolved if the governor, speaker of the house, and president of the senate had simply met and tried to reach some agreement. On another matter they stated that the statute regarding the use of a photo ID for voting has passed the house but had been held up in the senate. The representatives were asked who they were supporting in the next elections for statewide office. Nahan’s desk mate in Nikke Haley who is running for governor. Chip’s desk mate is Ted Pitts who is running for Lt. Governor. While they both indicated they would support their desk mates, they said there would be a lot of candidates for statewide office. Chip and Nathan talked about a committee that was going to be conducting an evaluation of our tax structure. One of them felt it was flawed because it did not include property tax in the evaluation. Both representatives stayed after the meeting to take questions.

Rotary Meeting of June 3, 2009

Each Wednesday as we arrive to attend our Rotary meeting most of us look forward to starting our morning with a delicious hot breakfast “buffet” bar that rivals any restaurant in the area. Many of us in the Rotary Club of Lake Murray – Irmo have known our caterer Tim Scott since the early 1990’s when he was not only a member of our Club, but was also responsible for catering our breakfast meal. He has been our caterer, “off and on” (mostly “on”) during this time. Tim owns his own catering business known as Tim’s Catering Service in which he manages out of the kitchens of Shandon Methodist Church in downtown Columbia. For the past nine years Tim has been the Director of Shandon Methodist’s Kitchen Ministries in which he and a staff of volunteers prepares several weekly meals for the congregation. He and his staff also provide continental breakfasts for the Sunday school classes each week. His service to Shandon Methodist keeps him pretty busy during the week, but he is available to handle other outside catering event like our Wednesday morning breakfast. As many of you will remember, Tim owned Capri’s Restaurant in the Kroger Shopping Center which featured delicious Italian cuisine. Since closing that restaurant a number of years ago Tim has focused mostly on his catering business. His catering for our Rotary Club breakfast actually starts the day before when he makes the food purchases and preps his casserole dishes. Tim arrives around 4:45 AM each Wednesday morning at his Shandon Methodist kitchen to begin the cooking Rotary breakfast. He is usually finished cooking and loading up his van by 6:15 to start heading our way with the hot food. Even though our meeting doesn’t start until 7:30 Tim is usually set up by 7:00 for those of us arriving early. We want to thank Tim for his loyal service to the Lake Murray – Irmo Rotary Club and the delicious hot breakfast that he provides each week.

Before beginning today’s program Rod Funderburk introduced Miss Courtney Gibson who is our Rotary Cultural Ambassadorial Scholar recipient. Miss Gibson will be headed next month to the South American country of Ecuador to help build a library and community center in the impoverished town of Lumbisi. She asked for donations of children’s books (preferably in Spanish), school supplies, art materials, or monetary contributions to help in the purchase of building materials. This week’s featured speaker was Adele Little, the Co-Director of Healing Species, a non-profit organization based in Orangeburg. Ms Little gave a power point presentation about the mission and origins of Healing Species.
The mission of the Healing Species is to intercept crime and violence by reaching children with our innovative, successful, and unique 11-week violence intervention curriculum. Rescued dogs - dogs nobody else wanted - assist us in teaching children:
• life-lessons in respect for the feelings of others,
• gaining power and authority from principles and acts of mercy and compassion instead of from bullying or "violence for violence,"
• age-appropriate awareness on abuse and how to get help and that what happens to us does not have to define us.
• methods for conflict resolution,
• self-esteem from developing responsibility, and
• how to take the initiative to create a more compassionate planet.
Through several years of legal research and personally conducting interviews with convicted violent offenders, Cheri Brown Thompson, founder and director of the Healing Species, discovered that not only did all of the violent offenders that she personally interviewed, but also all of those that she encountered through extensive literature reviews have two things in common: 1) they were abused as children and 2) they first acted out that abuse on the only victim more vulnerable than they, an animal. This realization led to the founding principles of the Healing Species, a program dedicated to ending the cycle of returning "violence for violence".
Thompson gave up practicing law, and now serves as the executive director of the Healing Species. Today, there is a waiting list of schools to be served, and Healing Species staff serves over 4,500 school children with the 11-week program each year in South Carolina. Healing Species also has satellite groups in several other states including: Arizona, Washington State, and Colorado.
Founding Principles
• Crime is a learned behavior. It can be unlearned. Even children who have never been nurtured can learn “how to” nurture others and themselves, thus intercepting the cycle of violence, abuse, neglect, and crime.
• Healing Species does not only address the problems of violence, truancy, and poor performance in school. Instead, Healing Species addresses the roots of these problems by dealing with issues of poverty, returning violence for violence, and gang related activities.
• The Healing Species curriculum opens the eyes of children and teens by teaching and empowering them that they do not have to “give-up” or “drop-out”. There are other choices.
• The lessons provide an epiphany for the children that they do not have to accept abuse; they do not have to join gangs; they do not have to sell drugs; and they do not have to fight their way through life.
• Healing Species Character Education can literally lift these children from an environment of violence: by empowering children with age-appropriate awareness about abuse and providing tools for getting help if in abuse;
by making certain the children learn appropriate ways to deal with bullies; by providing avenues of resolving conflict without fighting; and by providing “hands on” experience with lessons in respect for the feelings of others, and gaining power, leadership, and esteem from practices in mercy instead of from bullying.
• Once children gain empowerment in taking care themselves, the Healing Species opens their young eyes to ways of “making their heart strong” by teaching them how to practice responsibility, compassion, and empathy by reaching out to those around them.
• The children learn first hand that – just like the visiting dogs nobody else wanted- that they are important and do have something to give.
Ms Little wrapped up her program by giving some impressive statistical proof of why Healing Species has been successful thus far with their mission.

o Out-of-school suspensions for violent behavior decreased by more than 50%
o Retaliation Aggression, General Aggression, and Total Aggression Combined decreased by 62% o Teachers rated displays of violence by students decreased by 66.9%
o Choice making using empathy increased by 42%
o Suspensions decreased by over 55%

ROTARY MINUTES

MAY 27, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Eddie Robinson. Ros Browning provided the invocation and Lyman Whitehead entertained us with health and happiness. The Irmo High School Color Guard presented colors and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

New Officers and Board members were reminded to meet after next Wednesday’s regular meeting.

Jeanette Coulter reported that we netted $742.18 from the pancake breakfast. The Board decided to donate the $9.00 per member fee toward the fundraiser so the final total was $1,309.18.

A Distinguished Service Award was awarded to Barbara Wellm from Lexington Medical Center for Exceptional Vocational Ideals.

Speaker was Mitzie Schafer from Lutheran Family Services, Carolinas Partners in Hope for Homeless Veterans. Ms. Schafer spoke of the need for services for Veterans that are homeless. The criteria for admittance to the program are that the Veteran is homeless and has a mental disability (including drug and alcohol addiction). The facilities will house a Veteran for up to 2 years. The male facility is the Kinard facility in Greenwood and the female facility is in Columbia and is named Angels House. These facilities are partially funded by the VA and private fundraisers. After Ms. Schafer took questions from the membership, the meeting was adjourned.

Guest Speaker…brought lot of pictures, charts, etc.

His goal, have a permanent Lake Murray museum. Asked people to sign in to help with that effort.
Has a list of people who have lost lives in Lake Murray since its construction.
The build period…1927-1930. Original request for permit filed in 1925 for dam and power plant. The dam was built as Dreher Shoals Dam, which is the proper name. Water was used for electricity and there was a dispute over where and who would build the dam.

The firm that built the dam was part owed by Mr. Spencer Murray, from a NY firm, Murray and Flood. The soil was good for dam building at the Irmo spot. The original idea for a dam goes back as far as Robert E. Lee.
Sept 1927, first shovel. First electricity, June 1930. None of the dirt was hauled by truck. 70% wooded, 30% farmland. 6 schools, 3 churches, 192 cemeteries. Options were given to grave owners. 37 requests for memorial markers. Many done at no expense to the families.
People moved and sold land. Average price, $15 per acre. The going price at that time, $25 per acre. Some people only sold water rights. Most of the islands are still privately owned. Some people are still mad that the power company stole the land. The highest Mr. Shealy has seen on an acre was $90.
People that wanted to move back to the lake shore…they bought it back at $15 an acre.
Majority of homes were disassembled and moved. A few homes did get washed downstream. One house in Newberry did flood with people in it but the sheriff torched it to stop people from moving back in.
Some families were broken up because of the lake. Moved to different sides of the lake, etc., thus the different spellings of names, etc.
There were 9 ferries and one bridge. The bridge is still in the lake (Wise ferry).
The Santee lake was build at about the same time
It was the largest earthen dam when built, now it is the 3rd. 3 earthen buckets and 2 bulldozers. The dirt was built using railroad tracks across the dam and dirt dumped.
Dirt came from beach area of Lexington, the spillway, the boat ramp area, and the train run taking coal to the steam plant.

It was a rather unusual wednesday. Instead of the usual Rotary club
meeting, the members attended pancake beakfast arranged by Emilie Keene.
This started about 6:30 AM and continued till 9:30 AM. Several Rotary
members and business people from the community came to the drive through
and purchased breakfasts and contributed to the fundraising efforts.
Some members assisted in preparing the breakfast boxes to carry. Others
served breakfast to Rotary members who elected to sit down and had a
dialogue while eating delicious breakfast. There was a radio station
announcer that invited several members to speak on different issues.
Many Rotary members discussed local issues in an informal relaxed way
which was quite refreshing.

May 6, 2009

The invocation was given by Scott Mosely.

John Hanson introduced guest.

Lyman Whitehead asked if there were any birthdays or anniversaries.

Patty Cavanaugh made reference to the flyer “Pause for the Cause” that was distributed on each table.

John Adair stated that there will be two cart presentations today at the Chamber of Commerce, one for $100,000.00 and one for $150,000.00. John thanked all members for contributions to the cart fund. John also stated that Barbara Wilm was voted to be awarded the Vocational Distinguished Service Award for Community Service at last weeks meeting.

Emily King reminded all members that next weeks pancake breakfast is to be held between 6:30 am – 9:30 am. Emily stated that Rotarians would not be charged for their own breakfast, but encouraged Rotarians to pick up and sell tickets for this event.

Reid Danielson, Bill Danielson’s son, gave his classification speech. Reid stated he is a 2003 graduate of Dutch Fork High School. Reid also stated he attended Clemson University, against his father’s wishes, and pursued an architectural degree but during the process changed to finance and graduated in 2007. Reid stated he went to work for Meridian Bank after graduation. Reid stated that he is the “best fruit of his father’s loins” which is a direct quote from Bill Danielson. Reid also stated that he does not have much history which was disputed by Bill Danielson stating he could provide plenty of history on his son if Reid could not remember it. Reid stated that probably should not be done in this venue.

Si Amick also gave his classification speech. Si stated he joined The Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club in 1989 after being asked by Jim Jeffers to visit the club. Si stated he is the oldest of six children, grew up in Columbia, went to Christ School in Asheville, and graduated in 1980 from USC. Si stated he married his childhood sweetheart, Betsy, in 1980. Si stated in 1991 he established Data Com Systems, built a house on Lake Murray, and he and Betsy had their first child. Si stated they have two children, Allison and Paul.

John Adair introduced the guest speaker, Bob Crutchfield. John stated Bob is a member of The Columbia Rotary Club, serves on numerous boards, and is President of Crutchfield Associates, Inc.

Bob thanked John for the introduction and stated that it is rare for him to speak before a group of which he knows probably 35% of the people. Bob stated in 1986 he started Crutchfield Associates, which is an out-placement company. Bob asked the members what they would do if at 3:30 pm this Friday afternoon they were told that they no longer had a job. Bob stated that there are two to three things in life that he categorizes as “bumps in the road” and are as follows: loss of job, divorce, and loss of a loved one. Bob stated these are the things that make you stop and think about what is really important in your life and establish your true priorities.

Bob stated he spent 20 years working for the Sears Corporation of which part of that time he was a store manager in Brunswick, Georgia. Bob stated there was a time when a new store was being opened and he sent all of his assistant managers to that store and ran his current store by himself for an extended period of time. Bob stated during this time he worked six days a week from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm and decided this was not what he really wanted to do for the rest of his life. At some point he relayed this message to his boss and eventually he was “in transition”. Bob stated this is when you no longer have a job and are searching for what you would like to do. Bob stated at that time he went to work for Lucas Associates, a recruiting firm in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved his wife and children to the basement of his mother’s home in Atlanta. Bob stated this is when you realize whether your wife really loves you or not. Bob stated in 1986 he started a recruiting business in Columbia. In 1990 this business transitioned into an out-placement company which is now called Crutchfield Associates, Inc.

Again, Bob asked Rotarians what happens when you lose a job. Bob stated that when you lose a job you often start looking in the newspaper. Bob stated that 90% of all jobs are not located in the newspaper. He stated that approximately 70% of the jobs come through recruiters and approximately 5% are on the internet. Bob stated that 90% of the people find their jobs through people that they know.

Bob stated when you are “in transition” he suggests that you create a letter that you send to every acquaintance you know letting them know that you are “in transition”. Bob stated in this letter you simply let your friends know that you are in transition and ask them to help you if they have any information on any available jobs. Bob stated you will find out who your true friends are and some of them will give you a call and at that time may request a resume. Bob stated the second letter that you need to write is to companies that you think may have some possibilities and you should send the letter only to the CEO along with a resume. Bob stated that the out placement company can help you with this process and they will also send letters to people that they know.

Bob stated that age used to be a factor, however, it is not the factor that it once was. Bob concluded his talk stating “nothing is as bad as you think” and “nothing is as good as you think.” Bob stated that out placement can help people find out the things that they would like to do and then try to find a place for them to do it. After Bob concluded his talk, one question that was asked was “why do bosses lay employees off on Friday”. Bob stated there is never a good time to lay anyone off, however, people do go home after work every Friday and over the weekend are able to be with their friends and family which may help them to transition into what should be done on Monday. Bob stated if a boss lays an employee off on Monday, the only place they can go is to their attorney. Joel Collins raised an eyebrow at this and after that President Eddie adjourned the meeting.

Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Meeting Minutes for April 29^th, 2009

President Eddie Robinson brought the meeting to order. John Hanson recognized visitors. President Robinson introduced his wife Cynthia, and mother Mozell Robinson. Lyman Whitehead provided the club with health and happiness. His joke about a lie detecting robot was an amusing start to the day. President Robinson then gave an update on Bill Kopelman saying that Bill was responding favorably to his treatment and asked that the club keep Bill in our thoughts and prayers. The meeting was then turned over to Emily Keene and Maria Hargrave for an update on the pancake breakfast. The breakfast will be held May 13^th at the Seven Oaks Park location. Tickets will be available for sale soon, as will signs to be posted inside business locations to advertise the event. The fundraising committee challenged the club members to try and sell at least five tickets a piece for the event which will help support our club and our community. John Adair addressed the club regarding the vocational distinguished service award. The nominees were: Doug Trevette of Trevette Mailing Service, Dr. Robert Callis of Lexington Family Practice, Dr. Jon Pitner of Pitner Orthodontics and Barbara Wilm of Lexington Medical Center. The club then voted via ballots at each table. The winner will be announced during next weeks meeting. Blount Shepard gave the club a review of the previous weekend’s highway cleanup. Ten to fifteen bags of trash were removed from the Farming Creek Rd.. Blount also recognized the bravery of several first time shad roe and oyster gravy eaters. Zeke Riddle even claimed to like the stuff. President Robinson called Patty Cavanaugh to assist him in the induction of the club’s newest Paul Harris Fellow. Mozell Robinson, President Robinson’s mother, was recognized for her years of service to the community educated children as a public school teacher. After the induction, President Robinson allowed time for Happy Dollars.

John Adair introduced the speaker, Lou Nolan. Lou is a member of the Five Points Club in Columbia. She has served as her club’s president and is currently the Assistant Governor-elect for Area 2 of District 7770. She is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and Sustaining Member. Lou is also on the Board of the Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust, or better known as the CART Fund. Lou spoke about the origin of the CART Fund, its mission and the current state of the Fund. She began with a story to illustrate the effects of Alzheimer’s. She spoke of a pair of sisters, one whom had been diagnosed at a relatively young age with the disease. The woman had trouble remembering dates and times, then the names of relatives, and eventually found it difficult to recognize her own husband. Lou explained that for adults between sixty and seventy years old, most will experience some degree of normal memory loss. Those that seem to have a more extreme case should seek medical help and undergo a memory test. Alzheimer’s can affect a person at any age but is seen more frequently in older individuals. In 1995, researchers discovered one of the most aggressive genes related to Alzheimer’s disease. In that same year, Robert Ackerman led the Sumter, SC Rotary Club in organizing and starting the CART Fund. The idea was that Rotarians empty their pocket change as a donation to the Fund to support research. The program has grown from the Sumter club and has been adopted by each Rotary district in North and South Carolina and Georgia. The money collected is used to support Alzheimer’s research through a single grant awarded each year to various approved medical research programs. The grants are awarded through an association with the American Federation for Aging Research who reviews grant proposals and recommends the best ones to the CART Fund. Lou added that 99% of the money donated goes directly to research. To date, the grants total $2.3 million to various research centers. As for the results of the grants Lou offered this example. The University of Texas – Medical Branch received a grant from CART to study testing of blood and spinal fluid for markers of Alzheimer’s. The tests were originally unsuccessful but the researchers did discover a new protein linked to the disease. The discovery aided in the development of a new brain scan technique that allows researchers and doctors to recognize the early development of Alzheimer’s “tangles” in the brain.

Lake Murray/Irmo Rotary Meeting
April 22, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 7:45 AM by President Elect Ginny Barr. The invocation was given by Skey Caskey. Darren Bouknight introduced the guests including Ron Altoff from the ST. Andrews club and Roy Caney from Ascensions. Lyman Whitehead brought laughter from the group with his health and happiness message for the day. Lynn Campbell did an excellent job of reviewing the Rotary magazine with the members and reminded folks that April was Magazine Month. Members were encouraged to make the Rotarian a “must read”.

John Adair reminded members that next week we will be selecting the recipient for the “Distinguished Service Award for the Community” and nominations are still be accepted. Beetle Bailey announced that the Federation for the Blind was having a barbecue fundraiser and he had tickets available to the event.

President Elect Barr informed the members that Ben Herritage had resigned his position on the Board for next year as Vice President due to family reasons but would continue as a member. The Board of Directors, in compliance with the Constitution and Bylaws, selected Jeanette Coulter to be the Vice President.

George Staples and a friend of his, Dr. Stuart Hamilton and their spouses toured South Africa last October and utilized the Friendship Exchange program where they were hosted in Rotarian homes. Dr. Hamilton gave an excellent presentation on their tour and shared some fabulous photographs. The Spring Valley Club and our Rotary Club have joined forces and have pledged $2,000 toward a matching grant to assist the people of South Africa.

Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Meeting Minutes for Wednesday, April 15, 2009 President Eddie Robinson brought the meeting to order. Our invocation was given byJohn Adair. Visitors were Fred Splittgerber and Cheryl Cotton from the St. AndrewsClub. Larry Stohs introduced his guest, Meredith Allen, President of the IrmoChamber. Rod Funderburk introduced our speakers, Emily Stanek and Courtney Gibson. Rod introduced his guests, his wife, Rowena and grandson, Joshua. John Hanson announced two local events, the Richland County Electronics Recycling tobe held at Columbiana Mall on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 to 1:00 and a free shredevent at Irmo Town Hall on Saturday. President Robinson gave a reminder about the CART fund buckets for Alzheimers research. Blount Shepard reminded us about the highway cleanup this coming Saturday. We areto meet at his office in Ballentine at 8:00 for breakfast and fellowship before thecleanup. President Robinson asked us to remember Jim Wellman as he is undergoing knee surgerytoday. Ginny Barr reminded us of leadership training in Charleston tomorrow. John Adair asked that we submit to him the name of a non-Rotarian for adistinguished service award. This person is to be a full time employee in theircareer for at least seven years. Emilie Keene and her committee are finalizing plans for the last fund raiser of theyear and is asking for suggestions for a topic or speaker. Lyman Whitehead provided health and happiness. President Robinson conducted a ceremony to induct Jerry Isbell into membership ofour club, with Larry Stohs and Ginny Barr participating in the ceremony. We arepleased to have Jerry and look forward to his association and contribution to ourclub. Happy dollars were given from John Adair, who proclaimed his piano tuning hasreached 36,000; Joel Collins gave a happy dollar for his grandson, Deane, in honorof his 10th birthday; Commander Jay Seward's happy dollar was for 3 new ROTC cadets;Kelly Payne's was for her supportive Interact kids and their participation inAdopt-a-Highway; Beetle Bailey's was for his attendance of the Heritage GolfTournament and Larry Stohs for Eddie Robinson's Distinguished Service Award atClemson. Beetle Bailey announced an annual barbecue for next Thursday for $7.00. Rod Funderburk introduced Emily Stanek, who was one of the winners of the RotaryScholarship from our club last year. Emily was born in Boston and moved to Memphis.She will be traveling to Monterey, Mexico, 2 ½ hours from Laredo, Texas, in August. She will be spending an academic year at the Tecnologico de Monterrey. She is aSociology major and minor in Spanish, having graduated from USC in May 2008. Shehas studied in Costa Rica, where she lived with a host family. She is currentlyworking as an immigration advocate. She will be working towards her Masters inpublic policy and public administration. Monterey, Mexico has a population of 4million and is a multi-cultural city and a business and industrial area. Emily toldus she is alert to safety issues while traveling in Mexico. She thanked us for oursponsorship of her. Courtney Gibson was also a scholarship candidate last year. Courtney is originallyfrom Saranac Lake, New York and moved to Irmo when she was 12 or 13. She went toour Dutch Fork schools and is a graduate of the USC Honors College, with a major inPolitical Science and a minor in Spanish. She will be leaving in early July, 2009and will be studying in Quito, Ecuador. She will spend 3 months at the Academia deEspanol-Quito, studying Spanish. Courtney currently works on Latino issues oncampus, as well as AIDS and domestic violence. She graduated from George WashingtonUniversity with a Masters in International Affairs, with a focus on human rights. She was attracted to the Rotary Scholarship because of the service aspect. Shethanked Rotary for this opportunity. President Robinson thanked Emily and Courtney and also thanked Rod Funderburk forhis work on the Rotary Scholarships. The meeting was called to order by President Eddie and the invocation was offered by Patty Cavanaugh. John Hanson then introduced our guests, which included Bentley Murrell and Marci Medway from the Five Points Club, Scott and Jay Downs, and then two guests invited by Joel Collins including last week's speaker Roi Canty from Ascension Hospice & The Lodge at Ascension, and Christian Stegmeier, an attorney who works with Joel in his law practice.

Blount Shepard was then called on to announce the next Adopt -a-Highway Clean-up Saturday and promised a breakfast that would be "to die for". I think I'm goin'!!!

President Eddie then announced "Happy Dollars time" and numerous members reported they were happy for various family members doing various achievements but the high-light was when President Eddie announced that he was contributing a happy "five dollars" because he had forgotten to call on Lynn Richards to give us Health and Happiness in the earlier time slot. So Eddie then called on Lynn and she said a card was available to sign, going to Bill Kopleman, and then gave us several tips on how to pull an April Fools prank on our fellow workers back at the office. I am sure we all immediately went back to the office and made our fellow workers feel really foolish.

President Eddie then turned the meeting over to Ginny Barr to introduce our speaker who was David A. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Columbia Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in South Carolina. He said many people don"t even realize there is an FBI Group here in Columbia but they have 300 employees here, and they work closely with the Sheriff's Departments of both Richland and Lexington Counties, SCLED, and also local police departments. Mr. Thomas has over twenty years experience in the FBI, and although he has been Special Agent in Charge in several cities including St. Louis, he feels his tenure here in Columbia has been the best experience in his career.

Mr. Thomas has a wealth of experience in Ciber Crime Investigation and has assisted in the Ciber arena in fifty different countries. He spoke of Russia breaking into computors in the USA and referred to that practice as a "War Offense." He used a term of "Reverse Engineering" as a process and talked of intelligence devices, finding how they worked, and then how they would find a way to "jam" them.

Mr. Thomas talked of the FBI needing a gemologist to deal with jewel thieves so they sent him to different schools around the world to become a gemologist. They trained agents for covert entry and he said at one point he had to give mouth-to-mouth to a dog, because to enter a residence under suspicion, first they had to defuse a watch dog and when they were ready to leave the property they had to revive the dog so it would be like they had never been there. This practice gives new meaning to the term "Dog Breath".

Mr. Thomas talked of using the FBI intelligence initiative, on one hand, in Afghanistan, where maybe 10% of their 30,000 employees worldwide are used internationally to, on the other hand, making a contribution locally for gang related activities.

He also talked of keeping your computors at home safe by using anti-virus methods and keeping them updated. He said they have arrested some SPAM offenders that were making $500,000 - 750,000 per month from the hits to their somehow believable garbage offered because some people fall prey to these wonderful offers. His suggestion was to turn you computor off when not is use. Also when you use your credit card on line you might want to use "credit stops" to limit your exposure. I guess this makes some of us feel like we are walking around naked. How do you feel?

Our guest speaker was Roi Canty from Ascension Hospice & The Lodge at Ascension. Ms Canty, the Hospital Liaison for Ascension, described this Irmo business as being only one of two in-patient Hospice facilities in the Columbia market and the types of care and service offered by her company. Ascension moved last year to their new facilities on Woodrow Street. Ms Canty explained the various levels of Senior care that her company provides from the entry levels of Assisted Living at their facility known as The Lodge at Ascension to end-of-life services in their adjoining 14 bed Hospice facility. In addition to the Irmo facilities, Ascension offers in-home Hospice care throughout parts of South Carolina with offices located in Florence and Rock Hill.

The Lodge at Ascension provides 24 hour skilled care as well as having a medical doctor on staff. She stated that a majority of their patients are “private pay” and the average cost runs about $2400 per month depending on the level of services provided to the individual. Ms Canty indicated that the demographics of the “typical” assisted living resident was an 80 year old widowed female who may end up being a resident for a number of years. However, this is much different with their Hospice in-patient care unit where the stay is much shorter…10 days to two weeks. Ms Canty invited individual Rotary members to visit the Ascension facility for a private tour.

In other matters to come before the Club, President Eddie gave an update on the District Conference that was held in Columbia last week. He described the various events held over the two day period and thanked the members who attended. The Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club was the recipient of three awards; The Governors Citation, the Presidents Citation, and the silver Literacy Award were proudly accepted by President Eddie. Our Club was also recognized for sponsoring two of the three current Ambassadorial Scholarship students studying abroad at this time. President-elect Ginny Barr discussed the picture display board that chronological the Club’s recent past events. She thanked Debra Bailey for her work in putting the display together which was one of the better displays that was exhibited. Next year’s district Conference will be held in Myrtle Beach.

We also had two “classification” presentations. Michael Cromer, one of our newest Club members is the Commercial Banking Manager at First Community Bank on Lake Murray Boulevard. Originally from Chapin, Michael holds a degree in Finance from Clemson University, is married with two children (ages six and nine). Rod Funderburk, a Charter Member of the Lake Murray Rotary Club in 1989 spoke about his long professional career at the former Allied Chemical plant on St. Andrews Road, which according to Rod, has undergone 19 different name changes over the years. Rod held numerous mulit-plant managerial positions with the company and its successors over the years before retiring. Rod is now an energy management consultant with Resource Supply Management Rod is a former President of the Lake Murray Rotary Club and has done about everything at the club and district level over the years. Needless to say that this column would be too long to even attempt to list the numerous contributions to Rotary that has been unselfishly been made by Rod as he has exemplified the true meaning of “Service above Self”.

Joel Price gave our invocation and John Hanson introduced our visitors. Douglas Brown is a student at USC and is interested in a Rotary scholarship. Spencer McClay is Mike’s younger son and a former Rotary exchange student to Finland.

Lynn Richards provided our Health and Happiness. Lyman’s wife JoAnne is in the hospital and we need to keep her in our prayers. We were given a health update on Bill Kopleman and asked to keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

President Eddie reminded us to donate to the C.A.R.T. Fund. Lynn Campbell made President Eddie live up to a bet. Eddie wore a Wake Forest hat the entire meeting because Wake beat Clemson in basketball last week.

President-Elect Ginny Barr represented our club at the President Elect Training Seminar in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. She gave us some information on the upcoming Rotary year and the new slogan “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands”.

President Eddie wanted to notify the club that there will be NO MEETING next week, Wednesday the 18th due to the district conference.

John Adair and Joel Price each entertained us with their classification talks-Pizza, Piano, Price and Post Office.

Past President Chris Joye introduced our speaker Jonathan Mauger of the Boy’s Farm in Newberry. Jonathan gave a great talk about the Boy’s Farm and its 50 year history of helping ‘Build Boy’s rather than Mend Men’. He thanked the club for the $400 donation made to the Boy’s Farm.
