Our Speaker and returning Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, Alex Deyneka, who shared her Italian experience with our ClubReporter: Joel Price
As her first order of business, our newly installed President, Molly Cousins, brought the meeting to order with the sound of the gavel hitting the bell, which was followed with her leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Barry Johns provided the invocation and after breakfast, Harvey Hoots introduced our guest. Lyman Whitehead then provided us with some Health and Happiness information, which we all needed after not having a meeting the previous week. Thanks Lyman. President Molly asked us to fill out the forms she had put on our tables concering our preference on new name badges - she had previously sent an e mail to everyone, so this was a second attempt to get your opinion. Beetle Bailey brought us a banner from a Rotary Club in York, Maine that he had attended a few weeks ago. President Molly reminded everyone of the upcoming Board Meeting, Thursday, July 20, 7:30am at Past President Carey Hite's Office. Chris King was inducted as a new member and Bill Danielson had proposed her to be a member. Chris Joye conducted the induction ceremony. In the ceremony, Chris Joye reminded all of us, as well as our new member, of our responsibility of Service Above Self and in keeping the 4 Way Test. John Adair, our official Photographer was on hand to take a picture of our new member and later took one of our guest speaker. Rod Funderburk, introduced the guest speaker, 2004 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, Alex Deyeka. Alex spoke to us about her year in Florence, Italy. Alex is originally from the Ukraine and graduated from Dutch Fork High School. Alex commented that while in high school she shadowed with Jeanette Coulter. While she has decided not to go into banking, she valued the opportunity to spend time with Jeanette. Alex thanked Rod Funderburk and George Staples for their help in her being selected to be a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. While in Florence, she had to learn to speak Italian and she found that outsiders were not readily accepted. It took a while but eventually she fit in. She got involved in the local community by becoming a tudor and translated for the Enviromental Congress. Her host district was #2070, which has 95 clubs, with 12 of them being in the Florence, Italy area. She visited 9 of the 12 clubs. Alex also worked with Rotoract in Florence. While there, she worked on her Masters Degree in Art and had one of the highest averages in the class. Alex is completing her Masters Program in Chapel Hill, N.C. Patty Cavanaugh presented Alex with our much sought after Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Speaker's pin. We had a few minutes left for Happy Dollar Time. During that time, Skey Caskey introduced Jacob Neal. Jacob was a one of the receipients from Dutch Fork High School to receive one of the Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club Scholarships. Skey shared with us that while attending USC, Jacob had been mugged and left for dead. As a result of the attack, Jacob missed a lot of school. After the meeting, I spoke to Past President, Carey Hite, and was advised that he had spoken to President Molly and the decision had been made to continue with Jacob's scholarship. We had 50 members present and 3 visitors. President Molly dismissed us in the same manner as she brought us to order
