March 17 2010

This week our Rotary club met at D.J.J.

Mellvin Bowers: opened with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Demarkes Mankin & Carl Arnett had some encouraging remarks.

Andy Broughton praised the Rotary for being involved with D.J.J.

Traves Lawrence introduced the following three speakers:

  1. Ovantavia Coe graduated from D.J.J. He was in the interact club when in D.J.J. He is currently enrolled at S.C.State.

  1. Police Chief Davis  (Rotarian & police chief of Orangeburg SC) discussed problems of young men leaving D.J.J. and the need for good mentors for these released juveniles.
 
  1. Gerry Adjer  ( Deputy director of D.J.J.) –Thanked Rotary for our involvement.

Ginny Bar closed meeting.


March 24, 2010

-Rotary was opened by Bob Berry, who provided our invocation.
 Jacquelyn had everyone I stitches by sharing a story about sex and egg timers!!!
- If you see Barry Johns or Bill Coplan, wish them a happy Birthday.
-Reid Danielson informed us that the Billing will now be coming by e-mail so dont hit DELETE on Rotary e-mails uniti you open and print. 
- Ginny reminded us to bring Rotary Magazines for DJJ
-A check was presented to Samantha from Childrens Chance for $200.00 for their School Supply Drive
-Jeff Allen gave his classification talk
Guest Speaker, David Wright-
David shared with the group his very personal story about colon cancer and his daughters current battle with Colon Cancer.  He has become a very active advocate for colon cancer screening and education on how preventable this disease can be if screenings are done regularly.

Meeting Minutes
March 10, 2010

The meeting of March 10, 2010 was called to order by President Ginny Barr.

President Ginny recognized Stan Bugner who led the invocation, after which the Pledge of Allegiance was given by the body of the Club.

President Ginny recognized Kevin Meetze who advised the Club that he was working on a cabin where visiting parents could stay at the Boys Farm in Newberry, SC.  He was seeking support and construction assistance, both financially and manual labor.

President Ginny commented on the article in our current Rotarian Magazine regarding our Club's work with DJJ.  She requested that, once read, members donate their magazines to DJJ Interact Club members.  She also advised that our next meeting will be held at DJJ.

President Ginny turned the meeting over to Marylou Stinson who recognized the Teachers of the Year for Lexington/Richland School District V.  Stan Bugner then introduced guest speaker, Dr. Jim Rex, SC Superintendent of Schools.

Superintendent Rex provided a current update on our schools throughout South Carolina.  He touched on items that he classified as best of times and worst of times.  While he commented on the progress that had been made, Dr. Rex indicated that there was much more work to be done.  He commended our Club for the annual recognition of the Teachers of the Year in our school district.

The meeting was adjourned.
