7/18/2012

The meeting was opened by President Larry Stohs with a refresher on the “Object of Rotary” and he
closed the meeting later with the “Four-way Test”.

Visiting the club this week were: Jeff Waters, Sara Buck and Philip Stokes.

Joel Collins led the club “Health and Happiness” component, and reminded everyone of what “happiness”
meant to Thomas Jefferson and the framers of the Constitution; and how the Scots influenced their
philosophy of happiness. So; in short to feel happy; do something good for another quick.

Rod Funderburk presented Paul Harris Fellowships to new members Melisa Engel and Bryon Rodgers.

Past President Jeannette Coulter presented the 2012 year “Happy Dollar” collection of $605 in the form
of a check to Ms. Marcia Adkins, director of Sharing God’s Love, Irmo. Ms. Adkins thanked the club and
Jeanette thanked Jack Buck for her leadership in club health and happiness last year.

Brooks Williams introduced this week’s speaker, Mr. Ken Moses, director of the SC Department of
Juvenal Justice (SCDJJ).

Mr. Moses took the helm for a third time during his 37 year carrier with DJJ nine moths ago. He told how
the department has changed under the leadership of Judge Meyers and has evolved as a beacon of
balanced and restorative justice in the country. Once overcrowding was commonplace, over a thousand
at times occupied the facility built for 200. Currently 94 inmates are incarcerated at DJJ. This number
is down thanks largely to finding better restorative programs outside the gates for “status” offenders
(non violent offenders). Programs that are making a difference inside the gates include: participation in
Habitat projects, vocational and life skill training, and an emphasis on “green” ecology both personally
and corporately.

Respectfully submitted,

Blount Shepard
